  • Trainee Design Engineer (Primary) - Location: Manchester

    1. Job overview / purpose
    To be trained, developed and mentored to allow them to become an effective member of the Primary Engineering team in the Projects business area. 

    2.  Position in Organisation
    Reports to the Business Manager.

    3. Scope of Job
    - Experiencing all areas of Primary Engineering Design, with close guidance from appropriate Principal / Design Engineer.
    - Gaining product knowledge and site knowledge through visits to sites in the UK and factories in Germany.

    - Key areas to develop knowledge and understanding are:
    - Primary conceptual design on transmission substations.
    - Design of substation layouts and cross sections.
    - Calculating loading and short circuit values of primary plant.
    - Ensuring adherence to design specifications.
    - Ensuring consistency with the Engineering Department’s procedures.
    - Attending design reviews
    - Attending appropriate technical meetings with the client either site or office based to ensure visual client satisfaction.
    - Commitment to Vital Power.
    - Customers initiative including excellent call handling and voice mail skills.
    - Abide by all business compliance requirements in line with Company policies, for example Business Guidelines & Confidential Information.

    4. Dimensions & Limits of Authority
    Signature authority in line with Divisional signature protocol.

    5. Qualifications
    HNC / Degree Qualified in Electrical Engineering.

    6. Experience
    - Practical working knowledge of key Microsoft applications – i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook and Internet.
    - Good written communication skills.
    - Positive working attitude.

  • Senior Design Engineer (Protection) - Location: Manchester

    1. Job overview / purpose
    Responsible for providing protection designs, solutions and technical input to contracts and all areas within the employee’s business area.
     
    2. Position in Organisation
    Reports to the Business Manager

    3. Scope of Job
    - Responsible for the production of protection and control schematics for 132kV up to 400kV substations.
    - Responsible for the production of Engineering and Test Specifications for new and existing solutions.
    - Accountable for attending internal and external design reviews for technical input.
    - Ensures quality and consistency by carrying out functional testing during the Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) phase with the client.
    - Assists in Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) and specialist commissioning assistance when required.
    - Accountable for mentoring new members of the engineering department.
    - Maintaining consistency of design on each contract by adherence to processes.
    - Attends Technical meetings with the client as and when required.
    - Works closely with fellow engineers and project managers within Vital Power.
    - Commitment to Vital Power. Think Customer initiative including excellent call handling and voice mail skills.
    - Abide by all business compliance requirements in line with Company policies, for example Business Conduct Guidelines & Confidential Information.

    5. Qualifications
    HNC / Degree Qualified in Electrical Engineering.

    6. Experience
    - Typically six years design experience within the Electricity Transmission and Distribution industry.
    - Fully conversant with the latest Transmission and Distribution standards & technologies.
    - Extensive knowledge of protection schemes.
    - Good standard of IT literacy – especially Word and Excel.
    - Good written communication and interpersonal skills.

    3. Scope of Job
    - Responsible for primary conceptual design on transmission substations.

    - Liaises with the Civils department to ensure full scope of work is covered.
    - Ensures consistency by chairing design reviews and adhering to design specifications.

  • Senior CAD Design Engineer (Projects) - Location: Manchester

    Responsibility for ensuring drawings are delivered on time, within budget and to the required quality and associated standards.
     
    2. Position in Organisation
    Reports to the Business Manager

    3. Scope of Job
    - To work with Engineers on the design and production of engineering drawings, including schemes, equipment layouts and general arrangements.
    - Production of manufacturing drawings.
    - Ensuring adherence to processes.
    - Cross project team checking of design teams.
    - Demonstrate an ability to work with Engineering teams.
    - To undertake site visits throughout the UK to survey existing installations and undertake scanning of site drawings as required.
    - To undertake visits to control and protection cubicle manufacturers throughout the UK.
    - To meet the requirements of the various ESI Safety Rules to obtain Person Status.
    - To assist in the development and implementation of design office standards for use internally and by external design companies.
